Raising Your Voice, Part 4
In today’s high-tech world, it sometimes seems there are far fewer traditional speeches and far more “PowerPoint presentations.” Indeed, while we have not yet seen a State of the Union Address or a Presidential Inaugural speech featuring a PowerPoint, I suspect it won’t be long before we do. Economy, Pessimism and the General Election
Oregon decision-makers maintain a “bearish” outlook about the direction of the state and Oregon’s economy. While there is a silver lining – nearly half expect their own business performance to improve during the next year – the pessimistic mood may impact the outcome of the November general election.

Conkling Fiskum & McCormick (CFM) was listed last week for the sixth straight year as one of the 100 Best Employers to work for in Oregon. It is the seventh time CFM has made the list produced by Oregon Business magazine.

CFM, which is celebrating its 20th year in business this year, ranked 19th among the 33 small businesses with fewer than 50 employees, up from 30th last year.

The keynote address was delivered by Gary Conkling, CFM president and co-founder. (Click here to view one-minute video of pre-recorded comments.)

"We view being a good employer as a responsibility and as a competitive advantage," said Conkling. "How we treat employees says something about who we are as a company and that reputation is what attracts clients and talented people who want to work with us."

The Best Employer rankings are based on confidential employee surveys and a benefits report that is completed by each company. More than 20,000 Oregonians were surveyed this year. The aim of the 100 Best Employers project is to recognize and celebrate Oregon companies for their commitment to creating great places for their employees.

"This is an honor that is earned," says CFM partner Pat McCormick, who also spoke at the Best Employer banquet. "The companies that on the list are ones that value the relationship with their employees and taking time to listen and heed what they have to say. In that sense, the Best Employer recognition is all about a workplace created by both employers and employees working together."
